Clunes is an historic town about 40 kilometres west of our home in Daylesford. It is famous for several things... For being the site of the first reported gold strike in Victoria back in the early 1850s, for being Australia's first international BookTown, and for being completely gorgeous. (Watch this video on the Visit Victoria website and fall under Clunes' irresistible spell...)
This week I jumped into the car and headed to Clunes for a rare solo morning. The drive is through old farmland, pipped with volcanoes, and history.
However, I did not travel to Clunes for the history, nor the books, nor the gold (I'm sure there's still some out there). I did not travel to Clunes to stroll the massively wide main street (Fraser Street) lined with 19th century buildings (although all that stuff is certainly icing on the delicious Clunes cake).
I went to Clunes for the lollies.
Sure, in these anti-sugar times it is pretty much outrageous to admit, but I seriously love lollies and Clunes has one of the best lolly shops around.
Widow Twankey's Confectionery Emporium is a sight for sore teeth. This small pink and purple store is floor to ceiling sugar heaven. I went a little nuts - kid in a candy store style...
I even wanted to eat the chandelier.
In the end I took more photos than little bags of lollies. I settled for some teeth-achingly-delish fruit rock and a take away coffee. Sweet.
See you next time lovely Clunes. Next time I'll buy a book. Promise.
So are you a lolly freak like me? It's ok, I wont tell anyone. Just you and me and our dentists will know... shhh. So are you a jubey person? A chocolate freak? Do musk sticks float your boat? (I'm personally mad about a musk stick... and those Big Boss cigar things... YUM! - I don't think they're called that any more though...?) How about licorice? Caramel? Boiled lollies?
(OK, I'll stop now!)
Widow Twankey's Confectionery Emporium is at 50 Fraser Street, Clunes, Victoria.
Have a delicious week Gold Dust lovelies!
